Tab Attention Catcher

Menu Location: Products > Tab Attention Catcher

Overview

Tab Attention Catcher sends a quiet "come back" nudge to visitors who leave your store mid-signup. When a visitor who is not signed in switches to a different browser tab while they are in the middle of signing up, checking out, or have items in their cart, the store briefly changes the browser-tab title to one of your messages (e.g. "Come back! Your box is waiting..."), then puts the real title back the moment they return.

It is a gentle re-engagement hook aimed at converting first-time visitors. It never fires for someone just browsing your homepage with nothing started, and signed-in customers never see it at all.

The feature is off by default. Two things must both be true before it does anything: the switch on this page is turned On, and at least one message below is filled in.

Primary Features:

  • A single On/Off switch that lives only on this page
  • Five single-line message slots - fill in one or several, leave blanks to skip
  • A Use the example messages button that fills all five slots from the built-in examples in one click
  • Each message is limited to 120 characters so it fits inside a browser tab
  • When more than one message is filled in, the store picks a random one each time a visitor tabs away
  • Logged-out visitors only - existing customers never see it

Where Visitors See It

The nudge is not a banner or popup on your page - it changes the text of the browser tab itself. When a qualifying visitor clicks away to another tab (for example, to check their email mid-checkout), the tab title briefly reads as one of your messages. The instant they click back, the real page title returns. The message only ever shows once per tab-away, so it never stacks on itself.

The catcher arms itself the moment a logged-out visitor enters the funnel - they are signing up, checking out, or have items in their cart (including a Shop-Anytime guest with items in their cart) - and stays armed for the rest of that visit. So it still fires if they later wander to a product page and tab away from there. Someone who only browsed your homepage has shown no intent and gets nothing, by design.

Setting Up Tab Attention Catcher

  1. Go to Products > Tab Attention Catcher
  2. If it reads Feature is OFF in the top-right, click Turn it on and confirm
  3. Fill in at least one of the five Message boxes (blank slots are skipped). In a hurry, click Use the example messages to drop the built-in examples into all five boxes, then edit them to suit your store.
  4. Click Save Messages

A colored callout under the heading tells you the live state:

  • It's on and running - the feature is on and you have messages set; your store shows a random one each time a visitor tabs away
  • On, but nothing to show - the switch is on but every message box is empty, so nothing will happen until you add and save at least one message
  • It's off - use the toggle in the top-right to turn it on (you also need at least one message)

Turning the feature off

Click Turn it off in the top-right and confirm. Visitors stop seeing the nudge, even though your messages stay saved.

Writing good messages

Keep each message short - it has to fit in a narrow browser tab - and write it in your store's own words. Not every store sells veggies, so the built-in placeholders ("Come back! Your box is waiting...") are only examples; type over them with what fits your store. When more than one slot is filled in, the store rotates through them at random.

The Use the example messages button next to Save Messages copies those built-in examples into all five boxes in one click, so you have something to edit rather than a blank page. It only fills the boxes on screen - nothing is saved until you click Save Messages.

Common Use Cases

A single fixed nudge

Write just one message (Message 1) and leave the rest blank. Every qualifying visitor sees that same message when they tab away.

Vary the pitch across visitors

Fill in several slots with different phrasings; each visitor sees a random one each time they tab away. A way to try out different wording without any per-message scheduling.

Write to what is actually in progress

The nudge only shows to people who have already started, so word it to the moment - e.g. "Ready to finish signing up?" or "Don't forget your fresh delivery!" - rather than a generic sale line.

Troubleshooting

Nothing happens when a visitor tabs away

All of these must be true, and the callout on the page tells you which is missing:

  • The toggle in the top-right reads Feature is ON
  • At least one Message box is filled in and saved - the callout shows "On, but nothing to show" if this is the problem
  • The visitor is not signed in - signed-in customers never see the nudge
  • The visitor has actually started something: signing up, checking out, or has items in their cart. Someone who only browsed the homepage hasn't triggered it, by design.

Different messages keep appearing

That is expected. When more than one slot is filled in, the store picks a random message each time a visitor tabs away.

A message with an apostrophe or quote looks wrong

It saves and displays correctly - quotes and apostrophes round-trip clean, with no special characters to avoid.
