Gift Card Settings

Menu Location: Customers > Settings > Gift Cards Settings (also labeled "Gift Certificates Settings")

Last Updated: 2026-07-26

Overview

This page controls the settings behind your storefront's gift card purchase experience: the images shown on the gift card page, the dollar amounts customers can choose from, whether customers can redeem their own gift cards, and quick links to the emails sent for gift certificates.

Primary Functions:

  • Customize the 5 product images shown on your gift card purchase page, either by uploading a custom image or picking one of your top selling products
  • Reset those images back to the automatic top 5 bestsellers
  • Set the minimum and maximum dollar amount a customer can enter for a gift card
  • Set the three quick-select preset amounts customers see when buying a gift card
  • Allow (or block) customers from redeeming a gift card they purchased for themselves
  • Jump to the email templates used for gift certificate notifications and receipts

Page Layout

The page is organized into four sections, in this order:

Gift Card Email Templates

Links out to the three email templates involved in the gift certificate flow (opens each in the email template editor):

  • Gift Cert Scheduled Send Notification - sent to the purchaser when a scheduled gift card delivery goes out
  • Gift Cert Notification - sent to the gift certificate recipient with their gift card info
  • Gift Cert Purchase Receipt - the receipt a customer receives after purchasing a gift certificate

This section only links to the templates; it does not edit them here.

Gift Card Redemption Settings

One checkbox: "Allow customers to redeem gift cards on their own accounts." By default this is off, meaning a gift card can only be redeemed by someone other than the person who purchased it. Checking the box and saving allows self-redemption.

Gift Card Amount Settings

Two groups of fields:

  • Amount Limits: Minimum Amount ($) and Maximum Amount ($)
  • Quick-Select Default Amounts: Default Option 1, 2, and 3 ($) - the three preset dollar amounts customers see when buying a gift card

Defaults if you have never set them: minimum $25, maximum $500, quick-select options $50 / $100 / $150.

Gift Card Visuals

Five numbered positions (1 through 5), each showing either its current image or a "No image" placeholder. Unless you've customized them, all 5 positions are filled automatically with your top 5 bestselling products that have a photo. A "Reset to Default" button above this section reverts all 5 positions back to that automatic bestseller list.

For each position you can:

  • Upload Custom Image - opens a modal to upload your own image file for that position
  • Select from Products - opens a modal showing your top 30 bestselling products with photos; clicking one assigns that product's photo to the position

Image Requirements

Accepted formats: JPG, PNG, GIF, or WEBP. Uploading any other file type is rejected with "Only image files are allowed (JPG, PNG, GIF, WEBP)."

There is no enforced file size or dimension limit. In the admin preview, images are displayed cropped to 283 by 178 pixels, so a wide (roughly 3:2) image will crop more predictably than a tall or square one.

Uploading and Selecting Images

Uploading a Custom Image

Steps:

  1. Find the position (1 through 5) you want to change
  2. Click "Upload Custom Image"
  3. Choose an image file (JPG, PNG, GIF, or WEBP)
  4. Click "Upload and Save"

The image is uploaded and saved for that position immediately, there is no separate preview or draft step.

Selecting a Product Photo

Steps:

  1. Find the position you want to change
  2. Click "Select from Products"
  3. Click any of the listed top selling product photos

That product's photo is assigned to the position immediately.

Resetting All Images to Default

Click "Reset to Default" above the Gift Card Visuals section and confirm. This clears any custom images and reverts all 5 positions back to your current top 5 bestselling products with photos. It resets all 5 positions at once, not just one.

Common Use Cases

Use Case 1: Feature a Different Product on the Gift Card Page

Goal: Swap one of the 5 gift card page images for a specific product you want to promote.

Steps:

  1. Click "Select from Products" on the position you want to change
  2. Click the product's photo in the list

Result: That product's photo now shows in that position on the gift card page.

Use Case 2: Use a Custom Photo Instead of a Product Photo

Goal: Show a branded or seasonal image instead of a product photo.

Steps:

  1. Click "Upload Custom Image" on the position you want to change
  2. Choose the image file and click "Upload and Save"

Use Case 3: Change the Purchase Amounts Customers Can Choose

Goal: Update the minimum, maximum, or quick-select amounts.

Steps:

  1. In Gift Card Amount Settings, update Minimum Amount, Maximum Amount, and/or Default Options 1-3
  2. Click "Save Settings"

The quick-select defaults must fall between the minimum and maximum, or the save is rejected.

Use Case 4: Let Customers Redeem Their Own Gift Cards

Goal: Allow a customer who bought a gift card for themselves to also redeem it.

Steps:

  1. In Gift Card Redemption Settings, check "Allow customers to redeem gift cards on their own accounts"
  2. Click "Save Settings"

Use Case 5: Revert Back to Automatic Bestseller Images

Goal: Undo custom image changes and go back to showing your current top sellers.

Steps:

  1. Click "Reset to Default" above Gift Card Visuals
  2. Confirm the reset

Troubleshooting

"Only image files are allowed (JPG, PNG, GIF, WEBP)"

The uploaded file's type was not JPG, PNG, GIF, or WEBP. Re-save the image in one of those formats and upload again.

"Failed to upload image to S3"

The upload to image storage failed. Try the upload again; if it keeps failing, contact support.

Amount setting errors

Saving the Gift Card Amount Settings form is rejected with a message if the values don't make sense:

  • "Minimum and maximum amounts must be greater than 0"
  • "Minimum amount cannot be greater than maximum amount"
  • "All default amounts must be greater than 0"
  • "Default amounts must be between the minimum and maximum amounts"

Correct the flagged field(s) and save again.

  • Gift Cards (admin-edit.php?table=gift_certificates) - view and manage individual gift certificates that have been purchased
  • Gift Card Promotions (gift-card-promotions.php) - create percent-off or bonus-value promotions for gift card purchases
  • The three email templates linked from this page (Gift Cert Scheduled Send Notification, Gift Cert Notification, Gift Cert Purchase Receipt) control the emails sent for gift certificates

Best Practices

  • Uploading or selecting an image for a position takes effect immediately, there's no draft or approval step, so double check the position number before confirming.
  • "Reset to Default" affects all 5 positions at once. If you only want to change one position, use "Upload Custom Image" or "Select from Products" on that position instead.
  • Quick-select default amounts must sit between your minimum and maximum, so update the min/max first if you're planning to add a default outside the current range.

FAQs

What determines the default gift card page images?

Your current top 5 bestselling products that have a photo. This is the fallback used whenever you haven't customized a position (or after a reset).

Can I mix uploaded images and product photos across the 5 positions?

Yes, each position is set independently. One position can hold an uploaded image while another shows a product photo.

What image formats are accepted?

JPG, PNG, GIF, or WEBP. Other formats are rejected on upload.

Is there a file size or dimension limit?

None is enforced by the system. Images preview cropped to 283 by 178 pixels in the admin, so a roughly 3:2 image crops most predictably.

Do these images affect gift certificate emails?

No. These are the images shown on your storefront's gift card purchase page. The emails sent for gift certificates are the three templates linked at the top of this page.

Can I turn off customer self-redemption after enabling it?

Yes, uncheck the box in Gift Card Redemption Settings and save. The setting defaults to off.

What happens if I enter a default amount outside my min/max range?

The save is rejected with an error telling you the default amounts must be between the minimum and maximum.
