Grant Watch

Menu Location: Kiva Tools > Grant Watch

Last Updated: 2026-10-08

Overview

Grant Watch is a weekly KLAI scan of USDA and adjacent federal grant programs that your customers could apply for: local-food, CSA, farm-box, and subscription-grocery businesses, and the farms that supply them. It watches the program (most of which recur every fiscal year) as well as the live federal feed, so each new cycle is caught when it opens and a closed window is never presented as live.

Unlike Edge Watch and Feature Ideas, which look at what you should do or build, Grant Watch is about money your customers can go after. Each item notes what the applicant must prove (sales figures, subscriber counts, growth metrics, a marketing plan), which is the bridge to a report you could build to back up an application.

The page is available on the Kiva Logic master site. On other stores it redirects away.

Primary Functions:

  • Automatic weekly scan, plus a manual Force Run Now
  • Each grant tagged with its open window (Open, Upcoming, Rolling, Closed, Unknown), deadline, award range, and a link to the source
  • KLAI's guess at how directly the grant fits your customers, so obvious ones surface first
  • Triage each grant as Watch or Not relevant
  • Each grant carries a GW- id; run /grant <id> in Claude Code to pull one into a project and mark it Building
  • Email digest of newly found grants and of grants whose window has just opened

Where the Grants Come From

The weekly job researches these areas, then runs one synthesis pass that keeps only grants a Kiva Logic customer or a supplying farm could realistically apply for:

  • USDA local food: the Local Agriculture Market Program (LAMP) and its parts, including the Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP), Local Food Promotion Program (LFPP), and Regional Food System Partnerships (RFSP). Their eligibility explicitly names CSA programs, direct producer-to-consumer markets, and online sales
  • Farm to School: the USDA FNS Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grant Program, which helps schools source local food
  • Value-added & rural business: USDA Rural Development producer-facing grants such as the Value-Added Producer Grant (VAPG) and Rural Business Development Grant (RBDG)
  • Sustainable agriculture: USDA SARE grants and NIFA programs that fund local, direct-to-consumer, or regional food marketing by small and midsize farms
  • Specialty crop & organic: the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (state-administered) and the Organic Certification Cost Share Program
  • Nutrition incentive: USDA NIFA programs such as GusNIP Produce Prescription and the SNAP / Nutrition Incentive track, which fund clinics and nonprofits to prescribe or match fresh-produce purchases
  • Food infrastructure: Rural Energy for America (REAP), Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure (RFSI), and meat and poultry processing grants
  • Food-access financing: the Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI), USDA Farm Service Agency farm loans, SBA microloans, and CDFI food-system loan funds. Loans and financing are clearly flagged as such, not presented as grants
  • State and foundation: state Specialty Crop Block Grants, state successors to the federal LFPA, and foundation funders such as Fair Food Network and Wholesome Wave
  • Live federal openings: currently open USDA opportunities on grants.gov / simpler.grants.gov matching local-food, CSA, farmers market, direct marketing, food hub, farm to school, value-added producer, produce prescription, and nutrition-incentive keywords. This is the catch-all so a live opening is never missed

Off-topic results (big-ag equipment, research-only, unrelated sectors) are filtered out before you see them. A program that recurs carries its fiscal year in the title, so a new year's cycle is surfaced as a new opportunity rather than being mistaken for the one you already saw.

Force Run Now

A single Force Run Now button at the top runs the scan immediately, without waiting for the weekly schedule. A confirmation asks first, because the run makes several web-search calls and can take a minute.

When the run finishes you get a message telling you how many items were new and how many newly opened out of the total, and whether a digest email went out. Clicking Force Run Now does not disturb anything you have already triaged.

Items Table

Column Description
ID The grant's GW-<id> reference. Use it with the /grant command (below) to turn the grant into a project
Grant The program title (with its fiscal year), a short summary of what it funds, a "Why it fits" line, a "Must prove" line naming the evidence the application requires, and a link to the source
Window Whether the application window is Open, Upcoming, Rolling, Closed, or Unknown, with the deadline underneath when one is known
Amount The award range, such as $25,000-$500,000
Relevance KLAI's guess at how directly the grant fits your customers: High, Medium, or Low
Added The date the item was surfaced
Status Where you have filed the grant: Watching, Not relevant, Building, or New
Actions The Watch and Not relevant buttons

A Sort control above the table sets the order:

  • Smart (open + relevance) (the default): still-actionable grants first, with open windows and high relevance at the top, and Building and Not relevant items pushed to the bottom and shown faded.
  • Most recent and Oldest: plain date order, with no status grouping.

Building an Item in Claude Code

Each grant carries a GW-<id> in the first column. To turn one into a project, run /grant <id> in Claude Code, for example /grant 7. Claude drafts a project file from the grant and flips its status to Building here, so it drops out of the active list. Building items are shown faded, and a later scan never resets them.

If nothing has been generated yet, the page says so and points you at Force Run Now or the weekly run.

Triage Statuses

Status Meaning
New Freshly surfaced, not yet reviewed
Watching You have marked it worth keeping an eye on
Not relevant Not a fit for your customers. Shown faded and sorted to the bottom in the Smart view
Building Pulled into a Claude Code project with /grant and now being worked. Shown faded. This is set by the build workflow, not by a button on the page

Marking a grant Not relevant does not delete it; it stays on the page, faded, so you can revisit the decision. Nothing a later scan does will reset a status you set: if the same program and fiscal year is surfaced again, it keeps the status you gave it.

The Weekly Digest

After each weekly run, if anything new was found or a watched grant's window just opened, KLAI emails you a digest best-first, ranked by relevance and whether the window is open. The digest has two sections when both apply:

  • Now open to apply: grants already on your radar whose application window just flipped open. This is the "apply now" moment, shown first.
  • Newly surfaced: grants found for the first time this run.

Each grant in the email shows its GW- id, title, open window, deadline, amount, summary, why it fits, what the applicant must prove, relevance, agency, eligibility, and source link. When a run turns up nothing new and nothing newly opened, no email is sent, so the digest is always worth opening.

Common Use Cases

Telling customers about funding they did not know existed. A live USDA opening that matches a customer's business is worth a heads-up, and the "Must prove" line tells you whether their store already holds the numbers to support an application.

Tying a grant to a report you can build. The applicant_needs line names the evidence the application requires. When it maps to data you already store, /grant <id> turns the opportunity into a project to build the backing report.

Catching a seasonal window in time. Programs like FMPP recur on a fiscal-year cycle. The scan catches each new cycle as it opens and re-notifies a watched grant the moment its window flips to Open, so you are not caught by a deadline you never saw.

Separating grants from loans. The financing bucket flags loans and financing clearly. Mark those Not relevant if you only want to forward true grants.

Troubleshooting

No items on the page. Nothing has been generated yet. Use Force Run Now, or wait for the weekly run. If the page stays empty after a run, check the site's error log for a "Grant Watch" entry. A failed gather or synthesis step is logged there.

A run reports a failure. The message on the page names the error. A run that could not gather any material, or whose synthesis returned nothing usable, is reported as failed and stores no items.

Force Run Now is slow. Expected. Each of the ten areas is researched with live web search before the synthesis pass, so a run takes a minute or more.

A grant says Open but the deadline has passed. The window is KLAI's read of the source at scan time. Treat the source link as the authority and re-run the scan if the source has changed.

A grant you marked Not relevant is missing. It is still there, sorted to the bottom and faded. Not-relevant items are never surfaced as new again.
