Create New Box

Menu Location: Products > Boxes > Create New Box

Last Updated: 2026-07-27

Overview

A "box" is a subscription product type that customers sign up for on a recurring basis (weekly, biweekly, etc., depending on your delivery settings). This page is the form you fill in to create a new box type: its name, description, price, image, and the on/off settings that control whether customers can sign up for it.

What this page does NOT do: it does not let you pick which products go inside the box. Once the box is saved, its weekly contents are built separately on the Menu Builder page (turn on "Show on 'Menu Builder'" below so the box shows up there).

Primary Functions:

  • Create a new box type and set its name, description, price, and image
  • Control whether customers can sign up for it, and whether it shows up on your Gift Box pages
  • Set substitution rules for the box (whether items can be swapped, and keyword filters like "organic")
  • Optionally create a matching store product at the same time, so the box can also be bought as a one-time item

Page Layout

  • Save button and a Cancel link (returns to the Boxes list)
  • A note at the top: "Fill in the fields below - after you save this, you can edit it to view all the options and settings."
  • A single form, with the fields below in order
  • A link back to Menu Builder in the page's breadcrumb, since that's where you'll go next to add products to the box

There is no separate preview panel on this page.

Box Information Fields

Basic Information

Name

  • The name of the box, shown to customers (e.g., "Family Veggie Box")

Description

  • A rich-text (HTML) field to tell customers about this box

Short Description

  • A shorter plain-text summary field (stored up to 512 characters)

Pricing

Price

  • Retail price of the box

Original GB Price

  • Only relevant if you also turn on "Yes Gift Box" below. Put your gift boxes on sale by entering a higher "original" price here to display against the discounted price.

Target Cost

  • An internal number, not shown to customers: on the Menu Builder page, what your target wholesale cost is for this box. Used for your own cost tracking, not customer-facing pricing.

There are no separate weekly/biweekly/monthly price fields, no discount price field, and no trial price field on this page - just the single Price field above.

Signup, Gift Box & Substitution Settings

Allow Cust Signup

  • Presents this box as an option for customers to sign up for. This is the field that controls whether the box is offered to customers at all.

Allow Reactivation

  • Even if new signups are turned off, a customer who is re-activating their account (local deliveries only) can still choose this box.

Show on "Menu Builder"

  • Makes the box appear as a size option on the Menu Builder page, where you build out its weekly contents. Turn this on before you go add products to the box.

Yes Gift Box

  • Overrides "Allow Cust Signup" and "Hide From Gift Boxes" and forces the box to show as an option on your gift-box pages.

Hide From Gift Boxes

  • If your store uses the gift-box feature, hides this box from the gift-box selection page.

Allow Subs

  • Allows the customer to substitute items in and out of this box's contents.

Subs Must Contain

  • A comma-separated, case-insensitive keyword allow-list. Only items whose product name or price-sheet name contains one of these words can be offered as a substitution. This is how you build an "organic box": enter organic and only items with that word in the name can be subbed in.

Subs Must Exclude

  • A comma-separated, case-insensitive keyword block-list - the opposite of the field above. Enter organic to keep organic items out of a conventional box's substitutions.

All As Addons

  • When this box is created for a customer, every item in its menu is added as a priced add-on instead of a base menu item. Off by default (the store-wide default for this can be changed in Settings).

Count Items Towards Reserved

  • When this box is created for a customer, its contents count toward each product's "reserved" inventory total. Off by default.

Physical Boxes

  • How many physical bags or boxes this order will take (e.g., "1").

Coop Discount Allowed

  • Whether customers in a co-op receive their co-op discount on this box.

Box Tax

  • An optional per-box tax amount.

Signup Choice One / Signup Choice Two

  • Advanced, optional fields. They're only used if you sell this box through Stripe Checkout - they match a Stripe plan/box-size selection back to this specific box row. Leave blank unless you know you need this.

Marketing and Display

Image

  • Upload a picture of the box.

Displayorder

  • A number controlling where this box sorts among your other boxes (lower numbers appear first, e.g. on the Menu Builder box-size list).

There is no gallery/multiple-image field, no "Featured Box" flag, and no "limited availability" badge on this page.

Also Listing the Box in Your Store

At the bottom of the form there's a checkbox, checked by default:

"Also create new product for your shop linked to this box"

When checked, saving the box also creates a matching product (filed under a "Boxes" category) linked back to it, so the box can be purchased as a one-time item in your store in addition to being a subscription signup option. Uncheck it if you only want this to be a subscription box with no separate store listing.

Creating the Box

Steps:

  1. Fill in Name, Description, Price, and Image
  2. Set the signup/gift-box/substitution settings that apply to this box
  3. Leave "Also create new product..." checked if you also want it purchasable as a one-time store item, or uncheck it if not
  4. Click Save

After saving, you'll see a confirmation message with a link to go edit the new box - the full edit view exposes additional settings beyond this initial form.

Troubleshooting

Box Not Offered for Customer Signup

Check:

  1. Is Allow Cust Signup turned on?
  2. If it's meant for re-activating customers only, is Allow Reactivation on?

Box Not Showing on Menu Builder

Check:

  1. Is Show on "Menu Builder" turned on?

Contents (products, quantities) for the box are managed on the Menu Builder page, not on this Create New Box form - if products seem to be missing from a box, check there.

Box Not Appearing on the Gift Box Page

Check:

  1. Is Yes Gift Box turned on?
  2. Is Hide From Gift Boxes turned off?

Image Not Displaying

Check:

  1. Was an image actually uploaded and saved?

Solution: Re-upload the image.

  • Boxes - the full list of your box types; edit prices, settings, and manage existing boxes
  • Menu Builder - add products/contents to a box's weekly menu (requires "Show on 'Menu Builder'" to be on)
  • Box Dimensions - box volume settings
  • Box Signup Groups - configure the type/size box-picker pages that feed into customer sign-up
  • Average Spend Per Box Per Box Type Report - spend by box type
  • How Many Boxes Sold by Type/Date Range - sales counts by box type
  • Product Quantities Report - how much of each product you'll need across all boxes for the week

Typical Workflow:

  1. Create the box type here
  2. Turn on Show on "Menu Builder" and go build its contents on the Menu Builder page
  3. Turn on Allow Cust Signup (and/or Yes Gift Box) when ready for customers to see it

Best Practices

Box Setup

  1. Clear naming - use descriptive, customer-friendly names
  2. Compelling description - explain what's in it and who it's for
  3. Competitive pricing - research market rates before setting Price
  4. Good image - use a real photo of the box contents

Substitutions

  1. Decide up front whether you want Allow Subs on for this box
  2. Use Subs Must Contain / Subs Must Exclude to keep organic and conventional boxes properly separated, since matching is on the item's name text, not a product tag

Launch Planning

  1. Leave Allow Cust Signup off until the box is fully set up on Menu Builder
  2. Turn it on once contents, price, and image are ready

FAQs

Does creating a box here also add it to my store as a product?

Only if you leave the "Also create new product for your shop linked to this box" checkbox checked when you save. It's checked by default. Unchecking it creates a subscription-signup-only box with no separate store listing.

What's the difference between "Yes Gift Box" and "Hide From Gift Boxes"?

Yes Gift Box forces the box to show on your gift-box pages, overriding both Allow Cust Signup and Hide From Gift Boxes. Hide From Gift Boxes does the opposite - it removes the box from gift-box selection. They're both only relevant if your store uses the gift-box feature.

How do I stop offering a box for new signups?

Turn off Allow Cust Signup on the box's edit page (from the Boxes list). This is the only signup control on this table - there's no separate "active" flag.

How do I build an "organic" or "conventional-only" box?

Use Subs Must Contain (e.g., organic) to only allow organic-named items as substitutions, or Subs Must Exclude (e.g., organic) to keep organic-named items out. Matching is against the item's product name or price-sheet name - it isn't a product tag, so the actual item names need to contain the keyword.

Where do I set what products come in the box?

Not on this page - go to Menu Builder after saving the box (make sure Show on "Menu Builder" is turned on first).

Change Log

2026-07-27

  • Rewritten to match the actual admin-edit.php?table=boxes&addnew=true form: removed invented fields (Internal Name, Discount/Trial Price, per-schedule pricing, Box Size/Category/Tags, Active/Display-on-Website toggles, Available Routes, Subscription Required toggle, per-product content-management steps, Gallery Images, Featured Box, Limited Availability Badge, Clone Box, Permissions & Access tiers) and replaced with the real fields and settings from the page.
