Overview¶
Shipping Zips State Defaults assigns an entire state's unassigned ZIP codes to a specific hub in one action. This provides efficient bulk assignment while allowing ZIP-level overrides for specific areas.
Primary Functions:
- Assign all ZIPs in state to hub with one rule
- Provide fallback for unassigned ZIPs
- Simplify multi-state hub coverage setup
- Reduce manual ZIP-by-ZIP assignment
- Override with specific ZIP assignments as needed
How It Works¶
Assignment Priority:
- Specific ZIP Assignment (highest priority) - Individual ZIP-to-hub mapping
- State Default (medium priority) - All unassigned ZIPs in state
- Distance Calculation (fallback) - Nearest hub by coordinates
Example:
- California state default = West Hub
- Specific override: 90210 = Central Hub
- Result: All CA ZIPs ship from West Hub except 90210 ships from Central Hub
Common Use Cases¶
Use Case 1: Quick Regional Setup¶
Assign all Texas ZIPs to Dallas Hub in single entry instead of 1,000+ individual ZIP assignments.
Use Case 2: Expand Service Area¶
Open new hub, assign 3 states as default coverage area.
Use Case 3: Simplified Configuration¶
New operations: Assign each state to closest hub using state defaults, refine specific ZIPs later.
Use Case 4: Hub Consolidation¶
Closing hub: Reassign its states to different hub via state default change.
Use Case 5: Exception Handling¶
State default handles bulk, specific ZIP overrides handle metro areas or special routing.
Configuration¶
Steps:
- Select state from dropdown
- Choose hub to handle that state
- Save
- All unassigned ZIPs in that state now route to selected hub
- Specific ZIP assignments still take precedence
Best Practices¶
- Broad first, refine later - Use state defaults for initial setup, add ZIP overrides as needed
- Logical regions - Assign contiguous states to same hub when possible
- Monitor performance - Track delivery times, adjust if state too far from hub
- Document strategy - Note why each state assigned to specific hub
- Review annually - Reassess as order patterns change
Quick Reference Card¶
| Task | Action |

| Change state hub | Edit state record, select new hub |
| View state assignments | Filter/sort table by state or hub |
| Override for ZIP | Add specific ZIP assignment (takes precedence) |
| Check assignment | Search ZIP to see if state default or specific assignment applies |
