FAQs

How many parent categories should I have?

Optimal: 6-10 parent categories Maximum: 12 (more becomes overwhelming in navigation) Minimum: 4-5 (too few makes categories overly broad)

Should categories be product-based or benefit-based?

Product-based (recommended for food): "Proteins", "Produce", "Dairy"

  • Clear, logical, easy to shop
  • Customers know where to find things

Benefit-based: "Quick Meals", "Heart-Healthy", "Kid-Friendly"

  • More marketing-oriented
  • Works for specific audiences
  • Can be confusing if mixed with product-based

Recommendation: Use product-based for main categories, benefit-based for featured collections or secondary navigation.

Can I have a category with no subcategories?

Yes - parent categories can contain products directly. However, best practice is to use subcategories for organization if category has 20+ products.

What if a product fits multiple parent categories?

Options:

  1. Choose best-fit primary category (recommended)
  2. Use tags/attributes for cross-category searchability
  3. Feature in multiple categories (less common, can confuse analytics)

Best practice: Assign to one category, use robust search and filtering.

How do I feature a category temporarily?

Create seasonal or promotional parent category with active dates. Example: "Summer Grilling" appears May-August, then deactivate.

Should I use emojis or special characters in category names?

Not recommended for parent categories:

  • Can cause URL issues
  • May not display consistently
  • Looks unprofessional in navigation
  • Screen reader accessibility issues

Alternative: Use emojis in descriptions or promotional banners, not in category names.

What's the best default sort order?

Depends on category:

  • High-volume categories: Bestsellers or Featured
  • New categories: Newest First
  • Price-sensitive categories: Low to High
  • Premium categories: High to Low

Most common: Bestsellers/Featured First

How often should I reorganize parent categories?

  • Minor tweaks (order, images): Monthly
  • Filter/display settings: Quarterly
  • Major restructuring: Annually or when adding new product lines

Warning: Frequent major changes confuse regular customers.

Can I schedule category activation?

Check system capabilities - some systems allow scheduled activation/deactivation. If not available, set calendar reminders to manually activate/deactivate seasonal categories.

What happens to products if I delete a parent category?

Depends on system settings:

  • Products may become uncategorized (orphaned)
  • Products may reassign to default category
  • May prevent deletion if products assigned

Best practice: Reassign all products to other categories before deleting parent category. Or deactivate instead of delete.
